Two men are fighting for their lives after being horrifically stabbed with a machete by a man believed to be mentally challenged.
One of the victims had his finger cut off after the incident, which took place at
Anyaa NIC, a suburb of Accra in the early hours of Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
According to a report carried by United Television (UTV), the alleged mentally ill man, identified only as Mawuko, was known to kill locals’ poultry for consumption but they were always afraid to confront him because he always carried a machete. which he sometimes terrorized them with.
However, on the day of the incident, one of the victims allegedly learned that Mawuko was killing his poultry, so he became enraged and marched to his residence where he confronted him, leading to an argument and physical struggle.
Mawuko then tried to use a poultry-killing machete to kill the victim and in an attempt to fight back, one of his fingers was chopped off.
Another relative of the first victim, who realized his brother’s life was in danger, rushed to the scene to support him in disarming Mawuk, but also ended up with his arm split in two.
Mawuko is said to have lived in the neighbourhood for many years, having built a wooden structure attached to the fence of one of the residents.
A concerned homeowner reportedly complained to the police in the area about Mawuko’s potential danger to the safety of residents, but the law enforcement officers reportedly told him that it was not their job to remove Mawuko from the area.
There is fear in the area of a plot by some members of the community to take the law into their own hands and deal with the alleged mentally ill man.
