Earlier this year, I received a distress call from the Assistant Headmaster-Academic of my alma mater, Sunyani Senior High, Mr Mark Amoako ‘Goliath’. He informed me about the predicament of a bright young man who had clocked 8As in the WASSCE but as a son of peasant farmers in the Western North region, the dream of tertiary education was far-fetched. He challenged me to assist in whichever way possible.
I got in touch with the young man, Moro Suleyman and got further details about his situation. That night, I prayed to God to make me an instrument of change in his life. I reached out to a few people. As a parliamentary correspondent, I naturally reached out to the MPs of the constituencies, the young man hails from.

The first MP, I contacted, told me, that the best he could offer him was a place in his private College of Education. I don’t have anything against teaching. I am from a family of professional teachers and indeed my first ever job was teaching but the response from the MP was a source of disappointment to me.
I thought my boy deserved more! I contacted the MP of his other constituency, Hon. Abdulai Abanga of Binduri. He was receptive, bought into the idea of helping and quickly arranged to meet Moro in Accra and gave the young man, the time of his life, getting him to meet the Minister for Education in the process.
Fast forward to Today, Moro matriculated as a MasterCard Scholar at the prestigious Ashesi University where he will be enjoying a full scholarship for the next four years. I told him, that by entering Ashesi, he is 60 percent on the path of success in life.
He must remain focused and apply himself to attain the rest of the 40. This is one of the highest points of my life this year and I give God all the Glory.
Special thanks to Hon. Abdulai Abanga. I pray for grace, wisdom, health and substance to continue to be a blessing to many more people and to Moro, I know he will not disappoint us.
Yet again, Moro is one of the reasons why as a matter of principle, Free SHS as a policy should be protected and enhanced. I’m not sure how Senior High School would have turned out for him without Free SHS. May the Almighty guide our steps onto His Divine path for our lives. Congratulations My Boy!
