On Monday 29th August 2022 in the evening of about 7:43 pm, gunmen in a vehicle attacked Gingande a Suburb of Bawku. The men, numbering about 7 attacked the area and shot sporadically at anyone at sight injuring one person.
Our man on the ground, Sumaila Abu, a student journalist from the Ghana Institute Of Journalism reported that the gunmen were alleged to be from the Mamprusi side of the divide who attempted to attack the Bawku Naba area of residence. He said they attacked a hospital close to the area called Ever Joy and shot at patients on admission but hospital authorities were swift to protect their patients.
The Mamprusis in Bawku claimed they are fighting to dethrone the Bawku Naba and to take over the chieftaincy title from the Kusasis.
In November 2021, issues of chieftaincy rituals broke out from the Mamprusi side of Bawku that led to clashes which have continued until today. So far, about hundreds of people have died and many others injured in this tribal conflict.
The Bawku Municipal is surrounded by Pusiga district, Tempane district, Garu District, Binduri district and Burkina Faso. Other adjoining areas are Togo, North East Region, Bawku West and Nabdam.
The Bawku traditional area is generally termed as Kusaug traditional area because of the Kusasi dominance in those areas. The traditional head of the area is the Zugraan, Bawku Naba Asigri Azoka Abugrago ll.
Whilst the Mamprusis believes they are headed by Nayiri, the Kusasis also believes they are headed by the Zugraan, Bawku Naba. But the Mamprusis claim the Kusasis are not traditional rulers and cannot rule themselves thereby must be ruled by the Mamprusis in Bawku.
There are social media claims that the Mamprusis have threatened to do unto the Bawku Naba what was done to Ya-ana Yakubu Andani sometime back, others also claim the Kusasis are threatening to evict the Mamprusis from that area. They said they’ll massacre the Kusasis and take over the land.
Meanwhile, there is a military presence in the area currently but assailants manage to perpetuate various crimes and meander their way out of crime.
Calm has therefore been restored to the area after last night’s gun battle between gunmen and the military.
